  1. 1932- . French conservative politician, prime
  2. minister 1974-76 and 1986-88. He established
  3. the neo-Gaullist Rassemblement pour la
  4. Republique (RPR) 1976, and became mayor of
  5. Paris 1977. Chirac held ministerial posts
  6. during the Pompidou presidency and gained the
  7. nickname `the Bulldozer'. In 1974 he became
  8. prime minister to President Giscard
  9. d'Estaing, but the relationship was uneasy.
  10. Chirac contested the 1981 presidential
  11. election and emerged as the National Assembly
  12. leader for the parties of the right during
  13. the socialist administration of 1981-86.
  14. Following the rightist coalition's victory
  15. 1986, Chirac was appointed prime minister by
  16. President Mitterrand in a `cohabitation'
  17. experiment. The term was marked by economic
  18. decline, nationality reforms, and student
  19. unrest. Student demonstrations in autumn 1986
  20. forced him to scrap plans for educational
  21. reform. He stood in the May 1988 presidential
  22. elections and was defeated by Mitterrand, who
  23. replaced him with the moderate Socialist
  24. Michel Rocard.
